The day
Suva is a working capital rather than a resort town, and that is exactly why it is worth the drive. Colonial stone sits next to corrugated iron, the market spills over three floors, and the weather changes character as you cross the island.
You travel the Queens Road along the Coral Coast, then spend the middle of the day in the city: the Fiji Museum's canoes and cannibal forks, the produce and kava halls of the municipal market, the seawall promenade and the Laucala Bay waterfront near the University of the South Pacific.
It is a long day and a rewarding one — the version of Fiji that most visitors never see.
